Santa Cruz, Edgar Woods, Dr.  -  June 15, 1997

Dr. Edgar Woods Santa Cruz, 88, of Bay St. Louis, died Sunday, June 15, 1997, in Gulfport.

Dr. Santa Cruz was a native of Gulfport and had been a fulltime resident of Bay St. Louis since 1987. He was formerly a resident of San Antonio, Texas where he pracxticed medicine for 30 years in the field of obstetrics and gynecology until his retirement in 1980.

He was educated at Gulfport High School, the University of Mississippi, Baylor University, and graduated from Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, Texas. He did an internship at St. Luke's Hospsital in Jacksonville, Fla., and he did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Nix Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Captain in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded an Army Commendation for Especially Meritorious and Outstanding Service.

Dr. Santa Cruz was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Anthony Santa Cruz and Iola Anthony Santa Cruz; a brother Joseph Anthony Santa Cruz Jr; two sisters, Vivian Lanelle Santa Cruz, and an uncle, Edgar Woods Wells.

Survivors include his former wife, Myrtle Grace Rhodes Santa Cruz Smallwood of Bay St. Louis; a son, Edgar Woods Santa Cruz, Jr. of Bay St. Louis; a brother, Bailey Morton Santa Cruz of Birmingham, Ala; 3 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren

A private service is planned with burial to be in the Santa Cruz family plot at the Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.

Edmond Fahey Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.
