Alfonso, T. R. (Capt.)  -  November 15, 1997

Capt. Thomas R. Alfonso, 75, of Diamondhead, died Saturday, Nov 15, 1997, in Gulfport.

Capt Alfonso was born in Key West, Fla., and had been a resident of Diamondhead since 1985. He was a retired master mariner. He started his sailing career aboard the S. S. Florida Passenger Vessel in 1940. He retired in 1983. He served in the Atlantic Theater in the invasion of North Africa, the invasion of Europe, and the invasion of the Philippines. Capt. Alfonso was a graduate of Mariteime Officers School in New London, Conn. He was past president of Bay Waveland Chapter of the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship International and was a member of the South Mississippi Seniors and Gulf Coast Seniors Gulf Association. He was a Catholic.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas R. And America Lopez Alfonso; a sister, Carmer Erickson; and a brother, Michael Fabal.

Survivors include his wife,Anna Alfonso of Diamondhead; four daughters, Linda Bigler of Bear, Del., Maxine Gartman of Austin, Texas, Cathleen Alfonso of New Orleans, and Erica Gazekas of Gretna; a son, Thomas R. Alfonso III of Diamondhead; a sister, Vilna A. Cross of San Diege; two half-sisters, May Ellen Fabal of St. Augustine, Fla., and Cora Nunez of Miami; six grandchildren and three great-grandchiildren.

Visitation was Monday evening at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport. A graveside service was conducted Tuesday at Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna.
