Sylvester, James H.  -  Unknown Date

Departed this life on the 21st, February at his residence in Washington County, Alabama, James H. Sylvester, in the 52nd year of his age, a native of Sumter District, S.C. of which place he was a highly esteemed citizen until November, 1834, when he removed with his family to the state of Alabama.

He sustained the same high character that distinguished him in the land of his nativity, and modest and retired were all his habits, by a life of well ordered industry and a zealous, true, and honest discharge of all the duties of a citizen. In the short time he lived among them, he gained their entire confidence and esteem. Death, however, put an end to a life of virtue and usefulness in a manner painful as it was originally unexpected.

His illness was caused by the extraction of a tooth, which produced a disease that the best medical and surgical assistance was inadequate to relieve, after three months of unlimited agony brought him to the grave; a period of trial and sufering made subservient by him [...] (rest illegible).

Enlisted in the state of Alabama in October 1861, Company L-23 Alabama Volunteers. 1st Lieutenant. Discharged May 2, 1863 [...] disabilities.
