Planchet, Georges  -  July 10, 1894

Death of Georges Planchet

After a lingering illness of several months Mr. Georges Planchet, one of the most progressive and esteemed citizens of Bay St. Louis, died at his home Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock, comforted by the last sacrements of the Catholic Church.

Mr. Planchet's illnes was of a complicated nature and the best of medical skill failed to afford him relief. He bore his illness with true fortitude and died fully resigned as a true Christian.

Mr. Planchet was born in France 54 years ago, and came to this country some 20 years ago, stopping at Bay St. Louis. He commenced business in a small and unpretentious manner, but by his persistency, vim and splendid business qualities he came to the front very rapidly.

At one time he occupied the store building now owned and occupied by Mr. L. Spotorno, and owned one of the largest general merchandise stores at the Bay.

It was during this period, 15 years ago, that he was waylaid on his way home one night and almost murdered, the purpose of which was robbery.

Later he closed his general merchandise store and opened a dry goods establishment where it is located to this day.

As a real estate owner Mr. Planchet was one of the largest in this city, owning several handsome properties all located at the corner and in the vicinity of Front and Union streets.

The funeral took place Wednesday evening and was one of the largest that has ever taken place here. The Echo offers its sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives in their sorrow.
