Davenport, Philip Sr  -  January 4, 1999

Philip Ray Davenport, Sr., known to those who loved him as "Dick", died Monday, Jan 4, 1999, In Bay St. Louis.

Born June 22, 1925, and raised in Hattiesburg, he attended Sacred Heart School until age 15 when he enlisted and served in the 41st Infantry Regiment of the 2nd Armored Division. He served in the invasion of North Africa, was present t Omah a Beach, Normandy, on D-Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded and suffered frost-bitten feet and was later decorateed for bravery and received the Purple Heart.

Dick retired from the IGG Railroad in 1978. He was a life member of the VFW, 2nd Armored Division Association, United Transportation Union 1334 Hattiesburg, and was a member of St. Pauil Catholic Church in Pass Christian. At age 73, he is survived by many and will be fondly remembered as a kind,honest and loving man.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hanberry Davenport of Bay St. Louis; three sons, Philip . Davenport, Jr., of Hattiesburg, Burrell Pat Davenport of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Michael Allen Davenport of Ocean Springs; a brother, George Davenport of Biloxi; three sisters, Alice M. Roshto of Columbia, S. C.,Kathleen Davidson of Kenner, La., and Rita Gimina of Metairie, La., eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, William Steeleman Davenport; his parents, Calvin C. And Mary Doherty Davenport; and two brothers, Joseph F. Davenport and Calvin M. Davenport.

Pall bearers are Damien Mercier, Mike Mercier, Jay Wells, Robert Davenport, Bill Doherty, Buddy Joe Davenport, Buddy Matthews and Don Graham.

Visitation was Wednesday evening at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the funeral home with Msgr. Joseph Mercier officiating,. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery.
