Dennis, Rev Father  -  October 18, 1897

By those who knew him and the many who had in so short a time as his stay was had learnt to hold him in high regard and esteem will learn with profound sorrow of the death of Rev. Father Dennis which occurred Monday forenoon.

Dr. Rohmer gave a certificate of death as due principally to an abscess on the liver, which ailment was accompanied by typhoid-malaria. The day previous the sick room was officially visited by the yellow fever experts who announced the patient a victim of yellow fever, and with this declarance, after death, the body was immediately prepared for burial by Undertaker Tyler, prays for the dead ceremonies in private by R. Fr. Alphonse and the white coffin was hastened to the cemetery where the remains were laid to eternal rest.

Rev. Father Dennis was a native of France and was thirty years of age. He was in America only about one year and came to Bay St. Louis recently to assist Rev. Father Alphonse during the absence of V. Rev. Father Leduc who had gone to Europe, and who, as our readers know, died while away. Although his style of delivery did not stamp him as an orator, yet Father Dennis was a good speaker, fluency was his own and convincingly, and deep was his logic while the choicest of French was at his command. Father Dennis had made few sermons before reaching here having never spoken in his native country save in the capacity of professor.

The untimely demise is much deplored, and the spirit of the departed has the prayers of many.
