Obituary Record

Leonhard, Josephine Shuler  -  September 1, 1895

At an early hour last Sunday morning, after a period of long illness, there passed from mortal life into eternal life, the loving spirit of a loving wife and loving mother in the person of Mrs. Josephine Shuler Leonhard, wife of Mr. Louis Leonhard, of New Orleans, but whose home has been in Bay St. Louis, for the past six or seven years owing to the ill health of the deceased. The remains were conveyed to New Orleans Monday morning and placed in the family tomb at St. Vincent de Paul's Cemetery, the funeral being noted for its immense attendance. It is seldom New Orleans ever witnessed such a long line of sorrowing friends and acquaintances as that which followed the deceased to her last resting place, well testifying the unbounded esteem in which the subject of this sketch was held. To attempt to enumerate here in such limited space, of Mrs. Leonhard's good qualities, good deeds and of her incessant charity would be an infringement on the justice due her; however, we all know the good lady was widely known and in the minds of many are indelibly inscribed her immaculate deeds and deep in the hearts of many are shafts far more lasting and more worthy than those of gratitude which will remain for the perpetuation of her memory. One instance alone serves to show her goodness and liberality of her religion, when she donated all the land necessary upon which to erect a church, of a different religion from her own. Mr. Leonhard was 54 years of age, a devout member of the Catholic church, and leaves one daughter, Widow Rita L. Boardman, and four grown sons. To Mr. Leonhard as well as the entire family, we feel keen sorrow and deeply do we sympathize with them.
