In the middle 1930's, the Sam Whitfield Timber Corporation began its pulpwood operation in Logtown.  The Whitfield family members were among the peioneers in this area.  Their business was in existence in Logtown until 1964, when the operation moved to Kiln.  It was the last business to leave after the NASA acquisition.  (From a paper by Mildred Otis Fountain.  Copy in HCHS VF Otis)

Whitney, Mrs. S. M., and the fascinating Miss A. M. Tafft, elegant Senate restaurant is quite an acquisition to our city and our people may well feel proud of it.  The gracious, charming and hospitable lady managers are determined to make their restaurant a success and we are glad to see them succeeding in this direction.  The openings are all fly-proof screened, and the man who takes a meal at the Senate, you can bet, there'll be no flies on him.  (SCE 6/3/1893)

Whitney, Mrs., gave a dining to her friends last Sunday. Among the guests were Mrs. C. Gardebled and daughter Miss Florence Gardebled, Lella Anderson, Mr. Kirk and son, Lang Kirk.  Mrs. Whitney is the wife of a practicing lawyer at Mount Pleasant, Mich.  (SCE, 1-28­1893)

Saucier, Mr. Ed., has rented his beach property, on Front near Main streets, to Mrs. Whitney who is perfecting all necessary arrangements for the early opening of a first­class restaurant.  This will fill a long felt want in our midst, and it gives The Echo pleasure to spread the good news.  The restaurant will be known as "The Senate" by Whitney & Taft.  (SCE 04/08/1893)

 

Whitney, Mr. Tilden, a promising young man of our midst, left last week to join his father at Mount Pleasant, Mich.  His departure is greatly felt and his friends wish him a bon voyage and a safe return. He left for college, to chip the tree of knowledge.  (SCE 04/15/1893)

Wilkinson - Ladner, Mr. Rainey, was married to Miss Annie Wilkinson by J. E. Saucier, J. P., on July 12, 1893.  Both parties are from Harrison county.  Justice Saucier tied the nuptial knot in the most approved style and sent the couple on their way rejoicing. (SCE 7/15/1893)
