Dr. John A. Mead, long-time medical practitioner in Forrest County, died suddenly this morning at his offices in the Carter Building, shortly after arrival there.

Dr. Leo H. Martin, whose offices are located on the second floor of the building near those of Dr. Mead, said the physician apparently succumbed to a coronary thrombosis.

Dr. Mead died a few minutes after his attendant office nurse summoned other physicians to his assistance.

Son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Ames Mead, Dr. Mead was born in Logtown, Miss. He was 61 years old and lived at 115 North 22nd Ave. He was educated at the Soule Business College in New Orleans and was graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., in 1914.

Dr. Mead practiced in his hometown of Logtown 10 years and served as Hancock County Health Officer six years. He was one of the first leaders of the organization of the Boy Scout movement on the Gulf Coast. His late father was the first physician to practice medicine in Logtown.

Dr. and Mrs. Mead were married in October, 1911 in Magee. Mrs. Mead is the former Sallye Thames, daughter of T. M. Thames of Magee. They came to Hattiesburg in the fall of 1928 from Logtown. He was a member of the Lions Club, a thirty-second degree Mason, member of the Eastern Star and a member of Main Street Methodist Church. At one time he was a member of the Board of Stewards of Court Street Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 4 pm. Tuesday at Main Street Methodist Church. Dr. W. A. Hall, pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Jackson, will officiate. He will be assisted by Dr. B. M. Hunt, pastor of Main Street Church, and Dr. J.T. Leggett, former pastor. Reverend Hall officiated at the marriage of Dr. and Mrs. Mead.

Interment will be in Roseland Park Cemetery. Masonic rites will be held at the grave.

The body will remain at the Mead home until time for services.

Honorary pallbearers will be all doctors of the city. Active pallbearers will be R. J Evans, C.C.Drummond, H. H. Bunch, Sidney Drummond, Dr. R. A. McLemore and D. W. Holmes, Jr.

Survivors include his widow; one son, John A. Mead, Jr., medical student at Vanderbilt University, five daughters, Mrs. Robert Oden, Mrs. G. A. Bynum, Misses Abbie Jean and Sallye Mead of Hattiesburg, and Mrs. E. P. Johnson of Jackson; and five grandchildren.

Hulett Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
