Garibaldi, Manuel - September 16, 1893
On Sunday, September 16, 1893, at 11 p.m., Mr. Manuel Garibaldi died at his home in Bay St. Louis, after a lingering illness of 46 years.
At the age of ten the deceased was blood poisoned by impure vaccine and since has suffered at various times until relieved by death.
Born in Genoa, Italy, 56 years ago, and at the age of 17 years he came to Bay St. Louis, making it his home for the past 39 years. Mr. Garibaldi, with the usual steadiness and firmness belonging to the average European, soon entered the business world and at the time previous to his death was the oldest and one of the most successful merchants of the city. He never married. He lived with relatives to whom he was devoted and spent his life to give sunshine to all around him.
The funeral took place Monday evening from his late residence to the church of Our Lady of the Gulf thence to the Catholic cemetery, Very Rev. Father H. Leduc officiating. The Reverend Father delivered a few remarks at the church, appropriately touching on the useful life led by the deceased. The funeral was one of the largest that has ever taken place in Bay St. Louis, evincing the popular esteem and high regard in which he was held. The Echo, with the community at large, fully realize the loss of the departed life and to the sorrowing relatives extend sincere sympathy.
