Obituary Record
Magnard, John B. - September 5, 1897
The news received here this week of the almost sudden death of Mr. John B. Magnard was a shock to the many friends of that family. Mr. Magnard, until only a short time since, was a property owner of Bay St. Louis, and was not only a most agreeable gentleman to those who knew him but was held in high regard by the entire community. The following from Tuesday morning's Times-Democrat is accurate of the sad demise and will put to flight the rumor that the deceased contracted yellow fever while summering on the coast:
Yesterday evening at 4 o'clock all that was mortal of John B. Magnard was laid to rest in the St. Louis Cemetery. Mr. Magnard's death was a great shock to his family and to his large concourse of friends, as he was apparently in the best of health. Saturday night he retired at his usual hour, and on Sunday morning at 6 o'clock he was found dying in his bed. Physicians were sent for and medical attendance given, but to no avail, and he expired shortly after the arrival of the doctor of an attack of apoplexy.
Mr. Magnard was born in St. Etienne, Lyons, France, in 1839, and for the last forty-five years resided in New Orleans. He had been identified with the grocery business for a number of years and had accumulated quite a fortune. He visited yearly his native country, and this year was no exception to the rule. He was noted for the kindness of his disposition and his unbounded generosity, and many poor families will mourn his untimely demise. Mr. Magnard was for a number of years a member of the Board of Administrators of the French Society of New Orleans, which attended his obsequies. The funeral services were held at the St. Louis Cathedral, Rev. Father Mignot officiating, and the remains were interred in the St. Louis Cemetery. The pallbearers were Fortune O. Kroll, Capt. John Journee, Ernest Petitpain, Henry Wehrmann, A. Levepue and F. Fageret.
Mr. Magnard leaves a widow and several children.
