Martin, Robert, Dr. - October 2, 1999
Dr. Robert L. Martin, 68 of Diamondhead, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 in Diamondhead.
Dr. Martin was a native of Hartford, Conn. and was a physicist with the U. S. Government. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church in Kiln and was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.
Robert L. Martin was born in Hartford, Conn. June 21, 1931. He was the son of Rose Miko Martin of Lebanon, Conn. and the late Maurice Martin. He was a four-year Navy veteran of the Korean War and subsequently received a BA and MA in physics from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in marine physice from the University of Miami, Fla. He worked as a research physicist for the U. S. Navy in New London, Conn. In 1957-1978 durng which time he was resident technical manager of the Navy's Bermuda Research Detachment, 1963-1967.
In 1978 he transferred to the Navy's research laboratory in Bay St. Louis from where he retired in 1986. During that period he and his family lived in Picayune. On leaving the U. S. Navy he received a five-year appointment to the NATO post of Deputy Director, SACLANT Underwater Research Center in LaSpezia, Italy and later as a contract liaison scientist to the Office of Naval Research in London, England. On returning to the United States in 1991 he engaged in free lance consulting to the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the Picayune Rotary Club where he was a past president.
He was preceded in death by his father Maurice Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Ahearn Martin of Diamondhead; five sons, Stephen Martin of Boston, Jeffrey Martin of St. Louis, Jonathan Martin of Ft. Worth, Texas, James Martin of Seville, Spain, and Michael Martin of London; his mother, Rose Miko Martin of Hartford; a brother, Donald Martin of Chicaho; a sister, Elizabeth Aronson of Lebanon, Conn.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Wednesday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Kiln.
McDonald Funeral Home in Picayune was in charge of arrangements.
