The Mississippi Gulf Coast Council of Garden Clubs proudly presents its 40th annual Pilgrimage of homes and gardens. It is our hope that you will enjoy the hospitality that is extended to you by the owners of these beautiful homes and gardens. The tours are complimentary. Please follow the arrow markers which will be used in all communities. In some communities specific times are listed for viewing the houses and guests are requested to observe these times. The Gulf Coast Council of Garden Clubs and homeowners are not responsible for any accidents occurring during these hours. PASCAGOULA - MOSS POINT - GAUTIER Pilgrimage Chairman: Mrs. A. B. Hilley, Mrs. Jesse L. Dethloff, Mrs. Lura Moore, Mrs. Paul H. Moore and Mrs. J. B. Norwood Sunday, March 22 - 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1. HOME OF MR. AND MRS. A. M. SPEED, 1800 Anders Rd., Gautier. Located at end of Townsend Rd. north of Hwy. 90 with extensive frontage on Mary Walker Bayou. The beautifully landscaped grounds, featuring huge live oak trees, maintain the natural beauty of the area. Local and natural materials were used in the construction of the home, which is decorated with antique furniture and accessories. Refreshments will be served by Gautier Garden Club members in the gazebo overlooking the bayou. 2. DANTZLER-ALBERTS HOME, 5005 Griffin St., Moss Point. This recently renovated tum-of-the-century home is constructed of curly or rose pine, a rare wood that has the appearance of roses. The home features stained glass windows and a balustrade gallery across the entire front of the house. Hostesses will be members of the Moss Point Garden Club. 3. HOME OF MR. AND MRS. MICHAEL C. MOORE, 803 Kell Ave., Pascagoula. Built in 1909 this home once served as Lake Elementary School. The original front doors have two round leaded glass windows on each side. The home features beaded board walls, heart pine floors and quarter transoms accented with stained leaded glass. The former auditorium has been modernized into a large family room, two bedrooms and baths. Stairs lead to the master suite in a partially-exposed loft. Lake Garden Club members will serve as hostesses. 4. SPANISH FORT, 4602 Fort Ave., Pascagoula. Built in 1718 as a fortified French outpost, the fort claims the distinction of being the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley. Its 18-inch thick walls of oyster shells, mud and Spanish moss house an escape tunnel to a nearby bluff on the edge of Krebs Lake. Members of the Pilgrimage Garden Club will be the hostesses. 5. SCRANTON MUSEUM (Converted shrimp boat), Pascagoula River Park. Hostesses will be members of Pascagoula Garden Club. 6. HOME OF BERNARD CLARK, 1615 Pascagoula St., Pascagoula. New Orleans style home. Members of Pascagoula Garden Club will be hostesses. NASA’s National Space Technology Laboratories Pilgrimage Chairman: Mrs. Numa Snider Wednesday, March 25 Once again this year, this facility offers to pilgrimage visitors a glimpse of the area’s rich history and a look at the exciting future offered by science and technology. The NSTL Visitors Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. where visitors can view exhibits representing the work of NASA and NSTL’s resident agencies, live demonstrations, movies and a panoramic view of NSTL from the 90-foot Space Tower. Every 45 minutes, guided bus tours will take visitors to the Space Shuttle Test Complex and to the site of historic Gainesville along the banks of the East Pearl River. Cafeteria facilities are available and cameras are allowed. HANCOCK COUNTY WELCOME CENTER Wednesday, March 25 The Center was opened in 1979 at the junction of Interstate 10 and State Highway 607. This copy of an antebellum home has been called the “most beautiful Hospitality Center in the U.S.A.” and features one room reserved for antiques. Ladies from the Bay-Waveland and Diamondhead Garden Clubs will be hostesses from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PASS CHRISTIAN Pilgrimage Chairmen: Mrs. J. G. Drevar and Mrs. T. J. McMahon, Jr. Thursday, March 26 - 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 1. HANCOCK BANK ANNEX, 257 East Scenic Dr. This structure incorporates the historic Nelson Hotel. Registration, coffee and antiques display will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 2. THE TOWN LIBRARY, 221 East Scenic Dr., 10 a.m. to noon. The library is believed to be the oldest library on the Coast. The account books date from 1893, but the library has been in continuous operation for a longer period. President Woodrow Wilson visited the library during the winter of 1913-14 when he lived in the Dixie White House in Pass Christian. The library collection includes many first editions. 3. ST. PAUL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 151 East Scenic Dr., 10 a.m. to noon. This modern, beautifully designed church replaces the historic one destroyed by Hurricane Camille in 1969. It serves as a beacon for many seamen. A shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe is on the east side of the church. 4. PASS CHRISTIAN-HARRISON COUNTY LIBRARY, 111 Hiern Ave., 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Located directly north of City Hall, this facility was constructed following Hurricane Camille with local funds and contributions of money and books nationwide. Grounds were landscaped by the Pass Christian Garden Club and Friends of the Library. An arts and crafts show will be held. 5. TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, West Beach and Church St., 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This church duplicates the 1849original which was destroyed by Hurricane Camille. Of special interest is needlework done by a group of New Orleans ladies in memory of those who lost their lives in Hurricane Camille. In Live Oak Cemetery, north of the church, is the burial site of Frances Parke Lewis Butler, great-granddaughter of Martha Washington and grand-niece of George Washington. 6. “LE BELLE ARTI” ART CENTER, Davis Ave. and E. Second St., 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mrs. Bertha Giani has transformed this older home into a charming art center. She is renowned for her paintings in all media, sculptures and other creations, and is a blue ribbon winner in numerous flower shows. 7. WAR MEMORIAL PARK, 321 East Scenic Dr. The park was created after World War II to honor veterans who gave their lives for the United States since the War Between the States. A Victorian gazebo is featured, and bicentennial markers reflect the Revolutionary War. 8. WEAVERS COLLECTIONS-WEAVERS STUDIO, 1020 W. Beach Blvd., 1 to 4 p.m. Hand-woven items will be displayed and weaving and spinning demonstrations will be given. 9. WILD FLOWER GARDEN, Menge Ave. about one block north of East Scenic Dr. The garden has been a permanent conservation project of the Pass Christian Garden Club since 1954 and was first place winner of a National Council Award. 10. HOME OF MRS. SALLY BURKE, Pineville area, Menge Ave. Built about 1925, this magnificent two-story Spanish type home on Bayou Portage has five bedrooms, a beautiful staircase and solarium. The grounds have many huge oak trees and an ornamental iron and cement fence. Tea will be served from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. 11. PARADE OF GARDENS, 1 to 4 p.m. Gardens may be viewed at the homes of Mrs. Denby Garrison, 10 Wisteria Dr.; Mrs. T. J. McMahon, Jr., 104 Wisteria Dr.; Mrs. George Byrne, 110 Wisteria Dr.; Mrs. L. L. Denson, 113 Wisteria Dr.; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gregory, 115 Wisteria Dr. and Mrs. Frank Wilem, 104 Camelia Dr. GULFPORT Pilgrimage Chairman: Mrs. Mercer Miller Friday, March 27 - 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 1. HOME OF MR. AND MRS. RONALD BLACKLIDGE, 9 Bayou Place, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Three-hundred-year-old oaks surround this French Colonial home which features beveled glass in every window and door on the front of the house. The white-on-white entry foyer has 20-foot ceilings and an Italian marble floor. Each room has Austrian crystal chandeliers and gas-converted brass fixtures. The walkway leading from the courtyard-patio to the bayou is made of bricks taken from the street in front of the Hancock Bank in downtown Gulfport. 2. HOME OF MR. AND MRS. BUTCH OUSTALET, 4 Bayou Place, 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This two-story Acadian cottage, built by Victor Sheely in 1985, uses variations of a cameo pink and white color scheme in each room. The first floor features a master suite complete with an office, fireplace, mirrored bath and sauna. The living area overlooks a solarium containing a jacuzzi. Oriental rugs and antiques are displayed throughout the home. 3. LUNCH AT LAURIE’S SOUTHERN TEAROOM, 187 Teagarden Rd., 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Formerly St. James Rectory, this charming tearoom is a restored cottage which has been featured in Southern Living magazine. A special lunch will be served to Pilgrimage visitors, but reservations should be made by calling 896-3950. 4. HOME OF DR. GEORGE E. POWERS AND MR. DONALD P. JACOBS, comer of Southern Circle and Beach Drive, 1 to 3 p.m. This Mediterranean-Spanish style home was built on property once owned by Jefferson Davis by Dr. E. P. Odeneal, who called the house “Illihee” meaning “happy home” in Indian. Extensive restorations and additions have been made over the last 11 years, including the guest house which opens to a greenhouse connecting the pool-patio area and a new two-story greenhouse added in 1985. 5. GRASSLAWN, 720 E. Beach Blvd., Tea - 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Built in 1836, this is the second oldest house in Gulfport and is listed in the National Register of Homes. The house features furnishings of the period in which it was built, and the garden contains many interesting shrubs, herbs and a memorial rose garden. The Needle Art Guild will have an exhibit. Art work of several noted Gulf Coast artists will be displayed courtesy of Jere’s Junction and entertainment will be provided by The Classi-ques, a ladies’ ensemble directed by Rosalind Robbins. Hostesses will be members of the Gulfport Council of Garden Clubs. OCEAN SPRINGS Pilgrimage Chairmen: Mrs. P. F. Kaminski, Mrs. J. Sonnier and Mrs. E. Edwards Saturday, March 28 - 10:00 to 12:00 noon 1. GARDEN OF MR. AND MRS. JACOB GUICE, Lovers Lane. The charm of old Ocean Springs is evident in this beautifully landscaped garden. 2. GARDEN OF MR. AND MRS. HARRY SEWALL, 408 Ward Ave. The combined artistic talents of Mrs. Sewall, who is with an architectural firm, and her husband, a partner in Gulf Greenery Nursery, are expressed in the lovely grounds surrounding this home. 3. GARDEN OF MR. AND MRS. MAX JORDAN, 2006 Kensington Dr. The garden of this home features an impressive display of camelias and mature azaleas. 4. HOME AND GARDEN OF MR. AND MRS. CYRIL LAAN, East Beach. Mrs. Laan’s Dutch heritage is reflected in the antiques found throughout this home. A view of the Gulf may be seen from one of the most beautiful wild flower gardens on the Coast. Hostesses will be members of the Ocean Springs Garden Club. GULF HILLS (OCEAN SPRINGS) Pilgrimage Chairman: Mrs. William Demoran Saturday, March 28 - 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. 1. HOME OF JACK McCURDY, 149 Ridge Rd. The front of this white brick house features five French doors which give the appearance of a plantation home. The sunken great room has a cathedral ceiling and the rear of the home is U-shaped, wrapping around the swimming pool. The fireplace in the master suite is built from old Chicago bricks and the bath features a round tub with jacuzzi. 2. GULF HILLS MEMORIAL GARDEN AND PARK AT HALFWAY POINT, Shore Drive. This is a serene spot at the bend in a bayou set aside in the 1940’s by the late Mrs. Irma Branigar, wife of Gulf Hills’ original developer. The plot has been maintained by the Gulf Hills Garden Club and developed into a park and garden in which live memorials may be planted on behalf of Gulf Hills residents. 3. HOME OF JOY AND CHARLES CARR, 8 Point Porteaux. Built in 1967 by the late Mrs. Margaret Kiefer of Yazoo City, the present owners remodeled in 1985 to maximize openness and livability in the kitchen and first floor living area. The upper level guest quarters features a redwood deck salvaged from a watertank originally erected in Illinois in 1954 and brought to Mississippi by the Carrs. A spiral staircase leads to the patio below overlooking Biloxi Back Bay. 4. HOME OF MURIEL B. McELROY, 308 N. Shore Dr. This contemporary home was designed by Mrs. McElroy and her husband, Mac, who served as contractor, with Vaughn Laubon of Pascagoula as architect. The home features a lovely glassed-in porch overlooking the #11 fairway of Gulf Hills Resort Golf Course and a great room decorated with memorabilia reflecting Col. McElroy’s loyalty to the Louisiana State University Tigers. Tea will be served by Mrs. McElroy and members of the Gulf Hills Garden Club. LONG BEACH Pilgrimage Chairman: Mrs. Tom Blanks Sunday, March 29 - 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. 1. LONG BEACH GAlfc)EN CENTER, comer of Burke and 5th Streets.
