Abrams hits right note with weekly violin lessons
Larry Abrams hadn?t played the violin for seventy-five years until he took up the instrument a few months ago. He is taking violin lessons from Vicki Heidingsfelder of Long Beach and he and his wife, Lois, drive in from Diamondhead every week for the lessons. Larry played ?Minuet in G? for his high school graduation in Natchez when he was 16. When he went to college, he needed money, so he pawned his violin. His parents wanted him to play the violin, when all he could think of was playing football like his three brothers.
Larry?s father came to America from Romania at age 16. He hitchhiked across Germany to get on a ship to bring him to America. He entered America at Ellis Island and eventually settled in Natchez. His mother also came from Romania at a young age and had lived in a _____	community	not
far from Sam Abrams. She rode a train with her family to get to Natchez. His father began his business peddling produce and notions like scissors and thread to customers from Natchez to Vicksburg along the railroad tracks. He and his wife opened their grocery store, Sam Abrams and Co., in 1905. Larry?s father died when he was fourteen.
When he completed college,
Larry went to Boston and worked in Filene?s Department Store. Then he and a friend started a neighborhood newspaper, ?The Midtown,? for the west side of Manhattan. It was during the Depression and their advertisers were going bankrupt, so they abandoned that idea. He went to South America to look for gold and other minerals. At age 91, Larry Abrams is taking violin lessons again. Here he is with his teacher, Vicki Heidingsfelder of Long Beach.
participating in educational and informational programs. Larry and Lois played golf for years and also enjoyed boating and fishing but they have recently given up those hobbies. They are working on a pictorial history of the Abrams family?s life in Natchez.
