* **f? J ? k- 6 - :* . vi? - f/.W.. - By Kathy Pierce The Lionel Baxter Document Collection will be exhibited Nov. 1 through 11 at the City-County Public Library in Bay St. Louis. The collection includes documents, engravings, pictures, china, and original editions; mainly from the Civil War period. Mr. Baxter has a particular interest in old documents pertaining to the 20th Mississippi regiment of the Confederate army. His grandfather, Marion Francis Baxter, served with the regiment from 1861 through 1865, he joined Company "E" in Handsboro at the age of 13 years and 8 months, after running away from home. When Marion Baxter walked home from South Carolina in 1865, he was not yet 18 years old. The earliest item in the collection is a 1691 signature of William Penn, and there are signatures of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and many other officers of the Confederacy, including most of the commanders of the 20th Mississippi Regiment. There is a 1780 map of South Carolina and Georgia made by the mapmaker to the King (George III), showing the holdings of the original proprietors, among which were Mr. Baxter's family. Also on exhibit will be the ten plate set by Lennox -depicting scenes of the Civil War, which were made in a limited edition and sold to finance the construction of the Conferate Museum of Richmond, Virginia.
