Resident pens history of Carter?s post-presidential life

Historian Douglas Brinkley will begin his national book tour on his latest work ? about Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States ? in his new hometown, Bay St. Louis.
Brinkley has been living in the Bay full time for the last 18 months.
He likes its proximity to New Orleans, where he spends about three days a week as a history professor and director of the Eisenhower Center at the University of New Orleans.
?For a writer, it?s an ideal community,? he said. ?Every day, I?m learning more about this area as a historian. I want to get more involved in local history.?

He has written award-winning books on James Forrestal, Dean Acheson and Franklin Roosevelt, as well as ?Rise to Globalism: American Foreign Policy Since 1938,? coauthored by Stephen E. Ambrose.
The New York Times chose the books on Forrestal and Acheson as Books of the Year.
Brinkley, a regular contributor to National Public Radio, has written for The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Foreign Policy and The Atlantic Monthly.
In October, Viking Press will publish his next book, ?The American Heritage History of the United States.?
It took about four years to write the book on Carter, since he worked on it concurrently with other books, teaching c ities and other activities.
