Miss Elizabeth Hariel, who died this week, left, is here shaking hands with Miss Louise Crawford Hancock County?s first librarian, outside her home - a windowless log cabin. The ?Sellers Branch? library at that time consisted of two, low shelves in the bedroom of Miss Hariel?s windowless log cabin home. When the WPA ruled that public library? books could not be kept inside private homes, she built a 10 X 12 log cabin with windows to house the pitifully small collection of books.
MISS ELIZABETH HARIEL
Funeral services were today from Crane Creek Baptist Church for Miss Elizabeth Hariel, 85, born 1890, and lifetime resident of Hancock County, who died 6 p.m., Tuesday at her residence in Crane Creek.
Interment was in the Crane Creek Cemetery, Rev. Gerald Ladner, conducted the services held earlier today at the church.
Survivors include: two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Florence Hariel of Crane Creek, and Mrs. Mattie Hariel of Gulfport; five neices, and four nephews.
Possessing a great interest in the youth of the county, Miss Hariel built the first Sellers Community library.
