Dear Lynda:
There are still some inquiries that I plan to make in answer to your request. Meanwhile, I thought I should go ahead and forward to you the enclosed items.
By now, I think you have heard from Charles Gray, but I cannot recall whether he told you that he would very much like for you to do a biographical sketch of your ancestors who lived in Hancock County; if he did not, he asked me to request this of you. Others that he has assembled are usually one or two pages, with photos when possible.
One of my enclosures is a copy of the deed to the Jackson site - not a very good copy, but the best we can manage from microfilm. A little background may help. The seller is Sempronius Russ, who was a child when his father, Asa Russ, sold to Andrew Jackson, Jr. Upon Jackson?s losing the place (and others) in an 1861 sheriffs sale, it was purchased by Roderick Seal. Probably because of the Civil War intervention, the sale was not recorded until 1870. By then, Sempronius was an adult, and it is my guess that he was repurchasing old family property for which he had some nostalgia, even though they had lived in another part of the county for some years.
The following are extracted from the deed books in our courthouse:
1.	Indenture between Christian Roselius and Honore F. Deblieux, both residing in New Orleans. Sale is of tract of land on Bay St. Louis measuring 51 Vi superficial acres for $1800. It included improvements. Dated June 26. 1838. (This is the earliest entry I could find; does it surprise you that it goes back that far? An item of curiosity: in the margin the deed is listed as ?Roselius to Doubleyou.?) Book B, p. 104.
2.	Arbin Laforest of Lafourche Interior and HFD of Iberville Parish, sale to HFD of what appears to be adjacent to above for $250. 60 feet on shorline by 400 arpents depth. Dated March 15, 1841. Book B, p. 106.
3.	HFD of Louisiana sells to Antoine Cyprien Fremoulet of LA, 64 superficial acres, 316 feet on the Bay of St. Louis by 40 arpents. Included item 1 above, plus furniture, etc. $4500. Dated January 9, 1854. Joining in sale was Pauline, wife. Book B.
4.	Victor Conand, administrator and testamento annexo of Theresa Conand, deceased,, by decree of August 20, 1866, lands not being susceptible to a fair division,, after advertising in Gainesville Star lands situated in Shieldsborough (old name of BSL) sold 64 superficial arpents, 316 feet by 40 arpents, to HFD of New Orleans. Bid was $1000, ?highest and best.? Book C, p. 117.
