Who are the parents of Francois Favre (1798 -1873) of Waveland, Mississippi?
Researching this group of Favre's on the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coast has been most challenging. With French and Spanish priests spelling the names based on the pronunciation in their native tongues; other priests confusing parents and grandparents; baptism records of children where the father is not named due to the parents not married in the Church; and families using 2 last names, made for some serious study. During the 1700s, and early 1800s, the family of Fayard dit LaLancette went by the name of "LaLancette" or "Fayard", even for the same person. The "dit" is a French term that means "also known as." In August 1989, my wife and I published our 136 page "Favre Family History" thru the "Mississippi Coast Historical and Genealogy Society" of Biloxi, MS, Special Issue, #7. This paper contained all the information available to us at that time. Since then, we have found new information that has allowed us to add much new information to this paper and make several corrections to the original printing, such as learning the father of Pistikiokonay (Simon Favre's Indian wife) is NOT Chief Pushmataha. Her father was the equally famous Choctaw Chief Franchimastabe.
We have also learned that Pistikiokonay and Anne V. Lewellyn are not the same person. See pages 35 - 38, 60 - 61, and 74 - 77 in our Favre Family History for these issues. Evidence of these errors will be presented in a separate paper.
Below is what we know about Francois Favre's parents, Baptiste Favre and Susanne Fayard dit LaLancette:
"Susanne Fayard" is clearly listed as the wife of "Baptiste Favre" and grandmother of, "Mathilde Elina Favre" who was baptized on July 16,1829, and born on December 16,1828, the daughter of "Francois Favre and Eulalie Ladeniere." The maternal grandparents listed were "Jacque Ladeniere and Louise LaFontaine." This information was taken from Mathilde's Baptism record located at St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans, LA, (Bapt. Bk. 13, p. 91, act 395). The Godfather was listed as "Andre Favre".
"Suzanne LaLancette" is listed as the mother of "Francisco LaLancette" as found on his Baptism record at SLC in New Orleans (BB 14, p. 116). His record shows he was baptized on April 20,1800, and was born in "1798" without giving the exact day or month. The record does not list his father's name, indicating his parents were not married by the Catholic Church. This is, of course, our Francois Favre! Note the Spanish priest used the Spanish spelling of their French names, which is most typical. The Godparents were "Julia Favre and Juan Bautista Carco."
"Susana LaLancette and Juan Favre" are listed as the parents of "Maria Favre" who was "interred" on October 7,1801, at the age of 15 (born 1786), and she was "unmarried" (SLC Book F, p. 103). The "Juan Favre" is our Baptiste Favre. Juan (or Jean) could have been his first name, but this is the only time we find Baptiste referred to as Juan / Jean. We suspect the priest simply made a mistake with his first name, as we have found in many of these early Church records.
"Susana Sanfal" was the mother of "Bautista Fab" who was Baptized on "October 16,1784, at the age of 1 /t years" (born April 1783). This record is found at St. Louis Cathedral, INI. O., LA, Bapt. Bk. 9, p. 343. The child's father was listed as "Bautista Fab" and the Godparents were "Margarita Fab and Pedro
