WHO DID JEAN BAPTISTE BAUDREAU DIT GRAVELINE, SR. MARRY?
This paper is being offered to help correct the many errors existing today regarding Jean Baptiste Baudreau dit Graveline and his wives. There are several researchers that have offered their IDEAS as to who he married. These ideas include:
Jean Baptiste Baudreau dit Graveline, Sr. first married a Caucasian called "Susanne" (maiden name not given) on a business trip in 1706 to La Rochelle, France, and he brought her back to America. He had no children by her, and she died in October 1713, on Dauphin Island off the Alabama coast. They offer no sources, and this does not fit with the known facts pertaining to his life. From this point we will refer to him as "JBBG, Sr."
JBBG, Sr. first married "Susanne" (no last name given) about 1709, she was from La Rochelle, France, and had
2	children by her. The source for part of this was listed as the marriage record of JBBG, Jr., on March 1,1734, to Marie Catherine Vinconnau at the Cathedral of Mobile, AL (Bapt. Bk. 1, p. 102). In reading this record, Jr.'s mother is referred to as "Susanne," and he (Jr.) is referred to as a Creole of Dauphine Island. Jr.'s WIFE is listed as from "La Rochelle," and no mention of where his mother, Susanne, is from. It now becomes obvious where the "La Rochelle" error came from!
JBBG, Sr.'s wife was "Susanne", the Indian daughter of a Chief of the "Tejas-Hasenai" tribe. JBBG, Sr. met and married this young Indian girl while on a trade mission to San Juan Bautista, Mexico in 1717. This information came from an article by Richard H. Allen, III, of Crozet, Virginia called "SUSANNE" published in the "Descendants" magazine, Spring 2005 issue, page 29. Mr. Allen did a great job making his case for the identity of "Susanne", but while I feel his theory is possible, it is somewhat of a stretch based on other source information we have.
JBBG, Sr. married a woman named "Martha Lavergne." One researcher said she was his 1st wife from La Rochelle, France. Another claims she was his 3rd wife, married her in Mississippi in the 1740s, and had no children by her. They offer no sources for their statements.
JBBG, Sr. -- Other researchers claim he first married Emashapa Panyouasas, of the Indian Nation, "daughter of Choctaw Chief Pierre Opehaw Panyouasas and Alapaha Marianne Panyouasas," and she, Emashpa, was the mother of Magdeleine "Pany" Baudreau. Others say her name was "Marie Susanne Panyouasas," or "Suzanne Sauset," or "Margaritte Pany," or "Martha Lavergne," or "Amerindiene," or "Susanne La Rochelle," or "Margueritte Emashapa Panyouasas." One person gave a source as "28th January 1762 Certification of marriage to serve the required will. Signed by F. Ferdinand, Curate Choctaw Indian Rolls." I cannot locate this source to verify the information given. Others offered no sources for their information. It amazes me that some researchers can make these statements and not cite any sources!
In addition to the above, there are numerous versions, or combinations, of the above. Most researchers have done little or no research, and are only spreading mistakes and causing confusion for the many descendants of Jean Baptiste Baudreau dit Graveline.
