Mack Herring
Mack Herring is a retired public affairs officer and historian for NASA. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama where he majored in journalism and creative writing. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was Public Information Officer at the Army Aviation Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama.
Herring held positions with NASA for 3 3 years as the Stennis Space Center's first public affairs officer and first historian. He was also the first NASA employee sent to the Mississippi Test Facility before construction started in 1963.
He spent the last three years writing a history of the Stennis Center and its relationship to the community, the state and the nation's space program. His 454 page documented history will be published in early December and will be available to the public across the country. He is currently writing a new book that he may discuss today.
Mr. Herring received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the NASA Community Service Award.
Mr. Herring has served in various capacities as an officer in the Catholic Church, American Legion, the Lions Club, the Gulf Coast Mental Health Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, and the Gulf Coast Carnival Association. He is a 32nd Degree Mason and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
He has lived in Hancock County for the past 10 years, now residing in Bay St. Louis.
