Alcide Ladner
Louis Alcide Ladner, known as "Alcide" to his family and friends, was bom November 6, 1867 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He is the son of Delmas Ladner and Aurelie Guerry, pioneer residents of Hancock County. Coast records document that his mother's family had been on the coast for nearly 50 years by this time, and his father's family had been well established here for almost 150 years. Nap Cassibry, in his extensive study of the family entitled The Ladner Odyssey, published by the Mississippi Coast Historical & Genealogical Society in Special Issue - Number 6 in January 1988, states "It is my unshakeable belief that the sire of the Ladner family line was Christian Ladner, who arrived in the Coast area in 1719 aboard the vessel Le Marie."
Alcide Ladner was one of eleven children. His siblings were as follows: Victor Ladner, Marie Saucier, Emma Ladner, Cecile Dubuisson, Azelia Favre, Lovance Ladner, Aristide Ladner, Cyrille Ladner, Xavier Ladner, and Sylvan Ladner. Alcide was baptized at Our lady of the Gulf Catholic Church on April 12, 1868.
He was married to Cecile Seube, daughter of Jean Seube and Andresine Bordages, on June 9, 1890 at Our Lady of the Gulf Church. Mr. Ladner served as the City Treasurer and later as Justice of the Peace, representing Beat Five, for 12 years. After retiring from that position as justice of the peace, he served as the caretaker for the Cedar Rest Cemetery. Alcide and Cecile Ladner lived for many years at 217 Keller Ave in Bay St. Louis.
Alcide and Cecile Ladner had the following children: Edwina (married to Forest Luke of Bay St. Louis), Gaston (unmarried), Lillian (married to Herman Fayard of Bay St. Louis), Delmas (married to Robbie Odom of Hattiesburg), Sadie (married to Fred Roemer of New Orleans), Alcida (married to Thomas James of Bay St. Louis), Russell married to Beulah Burch of Mobile), Esther (married to Mr. Harry Witter of Bay St. Louis), Mable (married to Jack Bosarge of Biloxi), Mathilde (1st married to T. J. Wimprine, 2nd married to Ed Michel, both of New Orleans), Nolan (married to Ethel Strahan of Logtown), Emerita (died of spinal meningitis at 2 years old), and Curtis (killed by a train at the L&N depot as a young man).
Alcide died suddenly at 11:30 a.m. on July 16, 1948 at his home on Keller Ave in Bay St. Louis at the age of 81. His obituary mentions that he had just returned home from a visit to a downtown barbershop. Funeral Services were held at 4:30 p.m. at the Fahey Funeral Home and Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with the Reverend Edward Desmond officiating. He was buried at Cedar Rest Cemetery. Pallbearers for his funeral were A.G. Favre, Gerald Price, John Scafide, Walter Favre, Claude Monti, and Millard Toulme. Among those from out of town attending the funeral service were Mr. and Mrs. Edward James, Mr. and Mrs. Raoul Breaux, and Mrs. Mary Collins, all of Gulfport; Mrs. Jennie Bellocq, Mrs. Rosa Bassford, all of New Orleans; and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Hitt of Mobile.
