Marian T. Martin
Marian Martin retired from the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. While employed, she accepted a one-year assignment at Gulfside to help restore facilities and reactivate programs at this historical site. She experienced a warm Mississippi welcome, never dreaming that this shortterm assignment would extend into 15 years. As Executive Director of Gulfside, she has provided leadership to grow the operating budget from $85,000 in 1989 to $517,000 today. Since 2001, $1.5 million in gifts and pledges have been received to match a $1.5 million challenge grant for a stewardship and growth plan.
Gulfside sponsors educa-
tional, cultural and missional programs for all age levels. In ministry and outreach to the community, Gulfside provides temporary housing for families without a place to live. Special events include mission travel study, seminars and college tours, and summer day camps. Each year,
Gulfside accommodates over 5,000 people from all over the world where United Methodist Church is in mission. By hosting groups for trainings, seminars and retreats, Gulfside significantly impacts the local economy.
Marian became interested in mission at an early age. She has had international
travel experiences. And, she has received numerous awards	from
Gulfside Assembly, NAACP, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and has been recognized by the United Methodist Women of the Mississippi Conference School of Christian Mission and the Peoples Institute	for
Survival and Beyond of New Orleans. In 1999, she received the Ellsworth Collins Service Award from the Krewe of Real People.
Under her leadership, Gulfside can continue to provide a place where all of God?s people are welcome, and this why Marian Martin truly is one of Hancock?s Outstanding Citizens.
