;oumry aocwr... no greater service^gg^ Wolfe Sr. was honored by a ? group of friends at Hancock I General Hospital in Bay St. Louis, for his 40 years of service in the medical profession. The entire community honors this dedicated doctor on behalf of the thousands of his patients and their families, in addition to his friends and colleagues. Although a native New Orleanian, Dr. Wolfe has spent most of his life in Bay St. Ixjuis, where he attended St. Stanislaus College and graduated in 1923 at the top of his class. At Tulane University School of Medicine he finished among the top ten graduates and became a member of the Alpha Omega Honorary Medical Fraternity. Following internship at Charity Hospital he returned to the Bay to practice medicine. At the present time he is Chief of Staff at Hancock General and still makes house calls in addition to conducting his office practice on Carroll Avenue, which he shares with his son, Dr. Marion J. Wolfe Jr., a practicing optometrist. Dr. Wolfe loves to reminisce about the early days of his medical practice, when he traveled rough country roads at any time of the day or night, caring for patients in Hancock, Harrison and Pearl River counties, and when the Bay Bridge burned he crossed over to Pass Christian by motor boat. In cases where there was no money to pay his fee, he received a chicken, a few eggs or vegetables, or perhaps just good friendship. He delivered babies on kitchen tables by the light of a kerosene lamp, and his special delight was to assist the arrival of red headed girls, preferably twins! He recalls his years of practice in the Kings Daughters? Hospital, a small cottage on Carroll Avenue in use before the present Hancock General Hospital was built. Although he served as a ?round the clock? physician, he was also very much a leader in the Hancock County community. He organized the first Blood Bank in 1939, was president of the Merchants Bank, and is currently serving as president of the Merchants Insurance Company. In his leisure time he is an avid fisherman and a fine gardener. It is always a delight to pass his home and enjoy the landscaping. Dr. Wolfe is best known for his connection with St. Stanislaus School. If ever an alumnus loved his school and worked for it Dr. Wolfe would top the list. Since 1933 he has gone to the school almost no higher esteem, tsoAY. idn: 7 ?*T?T^viay 15 Dr. Marion J. every day to check on ?his boys?, and at no time of the day or night has he refused to go to them when he was needed. In 1973 he was elected to the school?s Hall of Fame. In order to have the boys participate in the honor he was invited to assembly on the day before the induction. As he entered the gymnasium there was complete pandemonium, when hundreds of students rose cheering and clapping, demonstrating their overwhelming affection and respect for their friend. He stopped the show as he circled the room, individually thanking and shaking hands with each boy. Dr. Wolfe is highly admired and respected by his colleagues, not only for his skill as a physician, but because of his dedication to his patients. Possessed of a sharp mind and a keen sense of humor, he has at all times the courage of his convictions. The confidence he inspires in others has earned him the love and loyalty which he receives from the thousands of his patients, their families, and especially to his colleagues in the medical profession to whom he has been an inspiration in perseverence and integrity. He epitomizes those qualities which once made the vocation of a country doctor one of the most respected and esteemed of this nation.
