4A-THE SEA COAST ECHO?SUNDAY, MAY 7, 1989 1 ] "QUOTABLE QUOTES" By Ellis C. Cuevas It made my heart feel good when Hubbard?s Hard- \ ware was among the businesses honored at the Han- j cock County?s third Salute to Business breakfast. The event was sponsored by the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Hancock County Board of Supervisors and the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce. I know Mrs. Dorothy Hubbard and her sons who con- I tinue the business were very happy to be recognized l after so many years of service to Waveland. I received my first start in the business world as an employee for Mrs. Hubbard and her husband, the late R.G. (Manny) Hubbard while a sophomore in high 1 school, working at their lumber and hardware company 1 after school and during the summer. Mr. Hubbard started with a sawmill on Third Street, Waveland, now called Daniel Street, cutting rough lum- | ber, eventually adding dressed lumber and builders ? hardware. | He then opened a hardware store on Blaize Avenue or Third Street, as some people call it, opposite the depot ; in Bay St. Louis, (A paint store is there now). He con- I tinued to sell lumber from the Waveland location. In 1954 Mr. Hubbard decided it would be better to | combine the businesses in one location, so he constructed a store at the present location. I I helped set up the new store on Nicholson Avenue, ? then, since I was number one on the draft list for Hancock County, joined the Army when the store opened. 1 The four years I worked for Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard j taught me a lot about the business world. And the j knowledge I gained from them still comes into use in my present position. i
