Our Lott kinship, through marriage into our McArthur ancestors, has been well established in our research titled “McArthur Family of Hancock County, Mississippi”. Identifying Celia Lott as the wife of James McArthur, Sr. was relatively simple and without doubt. Tracing Celia’s line back has been somewhat more difficult. Although there is ample evidence that proves various relationships, it has been a real challenge bringing all the pieces of information together. Never the less, we are convinced beyond a shadow of doubt that Solomon Lott is our direct ancestor as the following information will support.
A special word of thanks goes to Mr. Carroll E. Watts, now deceased, of Columbia, MS for his help with getting us started on our Lott research in the 1970’s. Other people that have helped with this Lott research and whose work will be cited in this paper include: Mrs. H. J. (Adaline) Love, now deceased, Hattiesburg, MS, and Mrs. Jane McAbee, Thomaston, GA. These three and several others have done genealogy since the 1940’s, and we interviewed and/or corresponded with them during the 1970’s when we completed the “first rendition” of our Lott History on May 31, 1979. Mr. Watts compiled plenty of oral information from older descendants of Solomon Lott who were still living at the time he began doing his research. He also traveled extensively throughout the southeastern states “documenting” whatever information he found.
More recently, we must thank John C. Barron, Corsicana, Texas for his personal research and developing an internet web site bringing together numerous Lott descendants to share and compile in one place all that is known on “our” Lotts. This site is a “work in progress”, which is continuously being added too and corrected. Mr. Barron's site contains plenty of Lott data, and he has done a great job citing sources and making sound conclusions when he has information to support his thoughts. Lott, Wynema McGrew, Sue Miklas, Hilda Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton W. Lott, and the many others that have helped us in this updated research.
In researching our Lotts, we have found the name misspelled as “Lot”, “Lotte”, and “Loth”. Examples of this are in the Mississippi Land Survey of 1834 conducted at the direction of the Surveyor-General, Henry S. Foote, Jackson, MS, as well as, various census, land, and church records. Mr. Watts believed the Lotts are of German or Dutch descent, while Mrs. Love’s research indicated the family may have its roots in the Protestant Huguenot rebellion of Europe in the 1500’s and 1600’s. Unfortunately, none of their extensive research was ever compiled or published. Other people over the years have “theorized” that our Lotts originated from England, Russia, were of Scotch-Irish descent, and even had a possible link to a Jewish heritage. As far back as can be traced, the majority of Lotts in MS and their ancestors followed various Protestant faiths. The obituary of my Solomon Lott’s son, Elisha Lott, in 1860 states that he and his parents were members of the “High Church of England” before he(Elisha) converted to the Methodist faith while a young man.
In a book called “200 Years of Lott History,” by Mr. W.N. Lott, Braselton, GA, Mr. Lott believes the name is Scotch-Irish” in origin. This could be possible in light of the fact that our Lotts often had their name misspelled “Loth” which would be the expected
