A PART OF HANCOCK COUNTY. MISSISSIPPI HISTORY
This story is supposed to have occurred at a period in local history, just after the conclusion of the Civil War, when the economic and political status of Southern Mississippi was far from being stable. My great grandfather owned over 1800 acres of land on the southside of the Jourdan River and a few miles west of the present Highway 43. There were many occasions when he was involved in business transactions. Local tales by those who relish in passing on interesting bits of history say that Peter Nelson was a shrewd bargainer. Whenever a deal was finalized, he believed that a person's honor was all that was needed to make an agreement binding on all parties involved. If the agreement involved a financial obligation by him, he would excuse himself, get into his boat, and after a while, return with sufficient cash to close the deal. After reading about the local history of that era, I realized most men kept their money out of banks during that
particular period.
