Grandma made long underwear out of Flannelette for the boys and Papa for the winters. They had a drawstring in the waist.
Not to long before grandma died her and papa went to Bay St. Louis and bought a new car. It was in 1927. Everyone would load into the car and go wherever they went. No one was left behind.
Shortly after they bought the car Grandma died. I remember grandma died and she had money in Merchants bank. I don?t know where she got all her money. It was divided between Papa and his siblings and Papa got the car.
After Grandma died things really got hard.
Ann had to quit school and stay at home to take care of the little ones.
It was not an easy life, but I made it.
Tony and Claira lived by them and helped out as much as they could. Lillian is just like one of my sisters.
Walter married Sarah Lind. They didn?t live by us. Ann wouldn?t tell me but I know she got no help from them.
Manuel married Everita Lind. The day papa got sick, him, Walter and Manual were in the woods making Moonshine (whiskey). Papa came in the house and said that he was so sick and burning up with fever. Old Dr. Ward came out and took care of him. Uncle Luther Perkins came over to help. Tony and Uncle Luther took care of Papa most of the time. All they had to treat him with was Mustard Poultice and vick salve. It was cold, cold when Papa was really bad sick. They told us he had phnenoumia and that?s what killed him. But like Grandma Mary his Death certificate has'other cause of death.
When Papa died Manual and Everita they moved in with us. In the summer time Manuel, Walter and Orvis and the boys would get enough wood that would last all winter. They would make lighter splinters to help start the fires. We had two fireplaces and a wood burning stove with four burners on top and a small one in the back. There was also a small tank on the back and you would keep it filled with water so you would have hot water when you needed it.
We always had a big garden and grew a lot of sweet potatoes. We had a lot of hogs that they would kill for meat. We would smoke some of the meat and salt some. They had a special jar for little pieces to be used for cooking to season with. And we made our own lard.
