Virginia Chapman Watts
As you have heard many times this year, Bay St. Louis is 300 years old. DeBienville settled in 1699* He represented France and he was Catholic. So this community was and continued for many years to be French and Catholic. But as people from all Europe settled this state, various churches were established. To this community came Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterians and Episcopals. The ancestors of some strong families who established these churches are in this graveyard. The Stockstill family and their children kept the Baptist church thriving. And the Chapmans, Capdepons, Worsleys and Jinks families kept the Episcopal church thriving.
Virginia Chap Watts was the daughter of William Joseph and Caroline Bukley West Chapmen', born March 18, 1909^ being the 9th child in a family of 10? She was baptized in the original Christ Church Church at the comer of North Beach and CarrollAvenue A She married William Watts Jr., November 20, 1937 and they lived on Watts Bayou at the end of Washington Street in a house that her husband built before they were married.V They had 3 sons/and all were raised in Bay St. Louis.

She became secretary to the church in 1953 and served until her death, July 21, 1969/ She also worked in the "New Day School" now known as Coast Episcopal Day School. She was a life long member of the women's Church Guild and was president one year of the Women's Auxiliary of the Bay-Waveland Yacht Club.'
In 1969 Christ Church on the comer of North Beach and Carrol was destroyed by Camille. The parishioners worshipped at the Coast Episcopal School on the beach, which had been in operation since February 1950, untilthe new church on the beach was completed (1971).
The new parish hall was named Virginia Hall in honor of Virginia Chapman Watts
Her picture hanging in the Hall is the legacy of a charming and caring lady^who tended the everyday life of the Episcopal flock.
The "Hall" is used by many churches and civic organizations for community events.
