Assistant police chief Douglas Williams, an 11 year veteran with the Bay St. Louis police department, was named acting chief Tuesday by the Bay St. Louis city council to replace former chief William Carbonette who resigned effective Aug. 31.
The 54-year-old Williams, who was the unanimous choice of his fellow officers to step in and fill the void created by Carbonette?s resignation, becomes the first black chief in the history of Bay St. Louis and is believed to be the first black chief of a predominately white community in the state.

days after which time the appointment will become permanent, according to council members, or a new acting chief is named.
Williams, who joined the force as a patrolman in 1965, was elevated to his previous position as assistant chief four years ago.
A petition from fellow officers of Williams urging the council to consider the assistant chief for the post said ?during the greater part of the past seven years (he) has been an outstanding member of the department? and that his leadership is unquestioned.
The council?s decision to elevate Williams was unanimous.
Mayor Warren Carver said the city had received four applications for the chief?s job, including Williams. The three other applications for the job came from Biloxi, Starksville and Chattanooga, Tenn.
In his resignation Carbonette told the council he was unable any longer to subsist on his $660 a month salary.
Williams said Wednesday his salary had not been decided but that he felt it would be the same as that of Carbonette?s.
