II. University and Travel: 1875-1889 1875-1876 Freshman year at Harvard University. Harry took Greek, Latin, German, the Classics, Math, Physics, and Chemistry —all required courses. (Later, he confessed that he had found Math and Chemistry difficult subjects.) 1876 May-November: The International Centennial Exposition was held in Philadelphia. Thirty-seven foreign countries were represented by exhibits showing their technologies, art and culture. Marking the 100th anniversary of the nation, the exposition made people stop and think about colonial history. Many local historical societies were founded as a result, including the BCHS in 1880. HCM attended the exposition and purchased three Tunisian plates, which he later placed on the walls of Fonthill. 1876-1877 Sophomore year at Harvard. HCM took History (required), also Latin, Rhetoric, and Philosophy. 1877 About this time, HCM’s family began annual summer vacations in York Harbor, Maine, where Aunt Elizabeth Lawrence had a cottage. 1877-1878 Junior year at Harvard.
