After much thought and research, this writer has been unable to identify “Mrs. Colombe” or find any other records on her. There is also some confusion as to exactly where each of Jean B. Doby’s children was born. All records indicate they were bom within the St. Louis Cathedral parish. However, keep in mind, this parish once included several south Louisiana civil parishes, and up to Biloxi Bay in Mississippi at one time. Most records and research indicate that Jean B. Doby lived in or around New Orleans prior to his moving to Mississippi in 1809. Then there are several records to indicate that he lived in Bonfouca, LA prior to coming to Mississippi. For example, the baptismal record of Annette Netto, a daughter of Jeanne Florentine Doby, states that Jeanne Florentine was a native of Bonfouca. Also, Raphael, a son of Thomas Doby, has a baptismal record that shows him, as well as his father, Thomas, were natives of Bonfouca, LA. This child was baptized in 1840. It should be noted that Hancock County tax records and other records show Thomas Doby in Mississippi as early as 1832 and still paying taxes in the year 1859. Interviews with many of the older descendants have no recollection of the Doby’s living in Bonfouca. Bonfouca is a small town near Slidell, LA. With the existing evidence, it seems that Jean B. Doby apparently stayed in Bonfouca for a period of time following his departure from New Orleans, but prior to his settling in Hancock County. It is a fact however, all his children, except the last one (Marcelline) were born in Louisiana, while Marcelline was born in Mississippi in 1812. Although Marcelline D’auby’s baptismal record does not specify her exact place of birth, she appears in the 1850 Hancock County census, and it states that she was bom in Mississippi. In later census records, Marcelline’s children state that their mother and father were both born in Mississippi. Keep in mind also, that Marcelline was bom in 1812 - three years after her father “inhabited” the land on Bayou Cowan in Hancock County. We will now begin the descendants of Jean B. D’auby (Doby) and Marie Jeanne Giraud. I. Eulalie D’auby - according to her baptismal record (St. Louis Cathedral Book 3, p. 55), she was baptized on May 26, 1798 at the age of 5 months. This would put her date of birth in January 1798. After she moved to Hancock County, she met and married Gabriel Casanova on November 8, 1814 (St. Louis Marriage Book 3, p. 150, act 478). He was the son of Pedro Casanova and Maria Andres and a native of Civour, Bishopric of Bayonne, France, according to his marriage record. Other variations of the name found in our research are: Casanueva, Casnauve, Casanave, Casanovas, etc. We will use the Casanova version because this is the way the family spells it today. It should be noted that the exact place of birth for Gabriel is not certain. On the baptismal record of his son, Joseph, he states he was a native of St. Jean deLuz, Department of Pyrenees, France and on the baptism record of another son, Francois, he states that he is a native of Libourne, Vizcaya, France. In the tracking of the Casanova descendants, things became somewhat complicated in that the baptismal records of Gabriel's grandchildren sometimes listed his name as Miguel Casanova and his wife, Eulalie D’auby, as Adelaide D’auby. Examples of this are in the baptismal record of Miguel Marti (St. Louis, Baptism Book 15 p. 466), and Manuel Marti (St. Louis, Baptism Book 19, p. 296). It is not certain why this happened, but there is no doubt that they are one in the same person. Possibly these were “nicknames” for Gabriel and Eulalie. 10
