Large Crowd Attends
The formal opening of the Bay Waveland Yacht Club took place Sat* urday night at a New Year's Eve Dance for about four hundred members and guests of members, with the club rooms filled to overflowing with people, bright lights and a spirit of good fellowship. Tables were placed in every available spot to accommodate parties large and small ranging from twenty*five people to four.
All through the evening there was a j line of people at the Smorgasbord of | delicious food and the atmosphere of intimate gayety made the party a real*, ly delightful one.
The Club was decorated entirely by members’ wives and all the food pre-pared by them for such a large party The ladies spent many hours in the kitchen preparing great quantities of potato salad and molded aspics and other dishes, and deserve a gnat deal of credit for their hard work.
At about eleven o'clock Commodore John Bell greeted tbe guests, lauded the steward and- stewardess of tbe dob,
Mr. and Mrs. Geiger, and introduced the floor show which consisted of an act by Florence Geiger, dressed as a sailor; Miss Patricia Bertram, in a Gay Nineties bathing suit, who sang “By the Sea”; an adagio dance by the two charming children of the John Pagans of New Orleans, Richard, twelve years old and Mildred ten years old; and a skit with black faced Dennie Tonkel, AI Weinfurter and Monk Smith, and with Myrtle Steiffel as a high stepping colored gal singing “Basin Street Blues” and doing the Charleston.
Commodore Bell and Mrs. Bell supervised the many minute details of such a large affair, obtaining chairs, placing tables, securing help, etc. Mr. Howard LeTissier, Chairman of tbe House Committee, took care of reservations and helped plan the menu, assisted by his committee, Tony Spence, N. L. Carter, and Dr. Wolfe, also by the voluntary aid of various members.
Officers of tbe Yacht Club are John Bell, Commodore, Charles A. Breath, Jr., Vice-Commodore, Robert L. Camors, Rear Commodore, John J. McDonald, Treasurer and Jo*. J. Kelleber, Secretary.

The Fish Class Boat is a 21 foot wooden boat equipped with a gaff-rigged main and a jib. The GYA adopted the Fish Class as it’s official One Design boat for it’s interclub races in 1920. It served as the official boat for almost 50 years, until a more modem and more easily transportable flying scot made it’s debut in 1969. Many Fish Class boats are still sailed and maintained along the Gulf Coast, for they were truly one of the classic sailing designs. The last GY A regatta using the F;sh Class boats was the Mardi Gras Regatta at Southern Y.C. in 1970. Bay-Waveland took 1st place with it’s “hot shot” skippers: Harry Chapman, William Reeves and Jack Bell.
