In 1975, the Fire Department received a class 8 rating and a Ladies Auxiliary for Volunteers was formed. Diamondhead has developed much of its land for residents. During this period, Devil's Elbow and the Oaks were completed. Also, four condominium villages were completed: Molokai, Kona, Lanai, and Lakeside. Later, Highpoint Townhomes was completed on the highest point of land on the Gulf Coast (105'). The completion of the Harbor House Townhouses ended the development of larger parcels of land and single homes became the priority. Over the years, amenities have continued to grow: Tennis World, a Pro Shop, a second golf course, a shopping center and most important, a private school has been established.
Even with all the building and influx of people, Diamondhead still retains its beautiful rolling hills and woods. Deer, rabbits, foxes, and racoons can be seen foraging in the woods of the undeveloped land and some animals will even venture into the yards of residents looking for a "handout". Many residents do feed the animals. Birds and Squirrels are especially prevalent. The Pine Golf Course at one time had a resident alligator named by a benefactor "Al". He was fed and taken care of for a long period, until he was seen on the course going to his benefactor for food. Soon afterward, as the story is told, he was last seen being transported to a nearby Bayou for safekeeping.
The dream which was begun in 1969 has continued through the 1990s to evolve into a thriving, growing community of people of many origins and ages, It is a true melting pot on the Gulf Coast and-a source of new life to an old era.
