PATRIOTIC FLAG RAISING CEREMONIES IN COURTHOUSE SQUARE About 500 or 600 citizens of Mississippi City and Handsboro gathered in the courthouse yard at 5 P. July 2, 1898, to witness the raising of the Stars and Strips on a 126 foot pole. The flafc vas 18 x 2b feet.
Hon. Judge T. V. Noland vas master of ceremonies.
The string band was on hand and nlayed several national airs, While the fl^g was being raised, the band played "Dixie" and "The Star Spangled Banner."
The report that Santiago (Cuba) h"d surrendered served to make the crowd more enthusiastic than ever.
