From all records the Casanova’s lived in or near Pearlington, MS. The Gabriel Casanova family appears in the 1820 and 1830 Hancock County censuses. According to the 1830 census, Gabriel was bom before 1770. In Hancock County Deed Book E, p. 237, a Doby land transaction shows Eulalie Casanova as a “widow” in 1836, thus Gabriel died between 1830 and 1836. Eulalie died around 1852, for Hancock County Deed Book A, p. 56, shows her estate being settled on September 27, 1853. Her heirs listed are: Francois G.; Rosalie, wife of Miguel Marti; Caroline Perdue; Joseph; and Mary L., wife of David J. Elder. Now for the children of Gabriel Casanova and Eulalie D’auby: A. Caroline Casanova - bom on September 25, 1816 (St. Louis Cathedral Book 8, p. 73). She appears in the 1870 Hancock County census living in Sheildsborough (now Bay St. Louis), as being Caroline Perdue, 53 years old, no husband, with children: Coralie, age 24, and Elizabeth, age 22. Also living with her is Joseph Casanova, age 40, her brother. They lived a few doors from her other brother, F. G. Casanova. She appears again in the 1880 Bay St. Louis census as “Caroline Perdeau,” age 65, no husband, with children: Coralie, age 35, and Elizabeth, age 33. Her brother, Joe, appears again this year living with the family. She last appears in the 1900 Bay St. Louis census as “Caroline Purdue,” age 85 and bom in Louisiana. It states she had no living children, and she was living in the house of Mary Ellen Ring, her niece. Our Lady of the Gulf Church records show Cora Mary Perdue died on November 14, 1895, and Mary Elizabeth Perdue died on March 7, 1891. Caroline Perdue is also listed as an heir in the Louis Doby estate. No one can remember this family or what happened to them. B. Francois Gabriel “Frank” Casanova - born on June 9, 1819 (St. Louis Cathedral Baptism Book 9, p. 90b). He often went by “F.G.” or “Frank” Casanova. In 1870 he is living in Sheildsborough (Bay St. Louis) with wife, Mary, age 50; and children: Virginina, 23; Frank, 18; Joseph, 16; Toulme, 14; Lilah, 12; Thomas, 8; and Julius, 6. Also in this household, is John Casanova, age 22; and his wife, Julia, age 19. In 1880, Frank shows up living in Pearlington. His occupation was “sailor.” He was with wife, Mary, age 59, and children: Virginia, 31; John, 30; Frank, 28; Joseph, 27; Toulme (son), 21; Thomas, 19; Julius, 15; Julia, 28 (daughter-in-law); Rosa, 9 (granddaughter); Albert, 6 (grandson); and Victor, 4 (grandson). Frank’s wife has been identified as Mary Sophie Adele Toulme, daughter of J. B. Toulme. They had their civil marriage “Blessed” at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church on December 25, 1847. In the J. B. Toulme Will in the Hancock County Court House, she is also named as his heir, and wife of Frank Casanova (Deed Book B, p.27, Hancock County Court House). Annunciation Church records in Kiln, MS show “Frank Casanova” died on March 26, 1894 at Logtown, MS. We know this is Frank (Sr.)’s death date because Frank Casanova, Jr. (bom 1850) is listed in the 1900 census of Hancock County. There is a headstone in the Logtown Cemetery for “Francis G. Casanova 1861 - 1893.” This is not the one bom in 1850, but probably the “Sr.” bom in 1819 that someone messed up the dates. He is buried next to “Adel S. Casanova 1819 - 1902” which would be his wife. The following information on Francois Casanova’s descendants was expanded by descendants, Mrs. Jessie (Clara Parker) Ashby of Bay St. Louis, and 11
