These other Stanfords are no doubt connected in some way. Jonathan Stanford, Sr. made his last recorded purchase at Nelm’s in 1777. Then on July 8, 2005, we received a letter from Henry K. Stanford, President Emeritus of the University of Miami, Florida and the University of Georgia. He was then living in Americus, GA at the time and was 89 years old. He said he was a direct descendant of Joshua Stanford who was bom in 1740, married Mary Rooks, and lived in Warren County, GA after the Revolution. Mr. Stanford stated that Joshua Stanford was the son of “Jonathan Stanford who was age 2 when he arrived at the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1683.” This would put Jonathan Stanford bom in or around 1681. He next names Jonathan’s father as Joseph Stanford, “bom about 1660,” who emigrated from England in 1683 with “three brothers sons (sic?) Jonathan, James, and Robert Stanford.” Dr. Stanford said this information was “copied from the old Family Bible of 1845.” He said he misplaced this old Bible and that he would ask his sister in Atlanta (her name not given) if she had it or a copy of it. We never received any more information from him or his sister. When we spoke to him by phone a week before his letter arrived in 2005, his voice sounded weak, and he had trouble hearing over the phone. Mr. Stanford died in 2009 and was obviously a very intelligent man that had studied his ancestry. While we are sure most of the information he gave us is correct, we reluctantly use it in this paper due to lack of documentation. We can estimate that Jonathan Stanford, Sr. was bom around 1720 based on the assumption that he was age 20 when his son, Joshua, was bom in 1740. Some researchers on Ancestory.com show Jonathan Stanford, Sr. was bom in 1723 in St. Mary’s County, MD, and died on October 17, 1792, in Columbia County, GA. They also say he married Ellender “Nelle” Mclntire who was bom in 1725 in St. Maiy’s County, MD, and died in Warren County, GA in 1760. They cite no sources. We question this information because our Jonathan Stanford, Sr., and presumably his wife, were still living in Maryland at least through 1777, as evidenced by the sales the family recorded at Nelm’s General Store. Additionally, when we look at the Columbia County, GA Will of Jonathan Stanford that was written on May 6, 1792 with probate beginning on October 13, 1792, we become even more suspicious. In this Will, Jonathan names his wife as “Nelle Stanford” (obviously still alive) and children as Betty, Sary, Robert, and Elijah Stanford. Why were his other children omitted, to include our Joshua Stanford? The names of these heirs do not fit with the names listed in Nelm’s Store Accounts previously covered. We are not even sure if this Jonathan Stanford who died in 1792 in Columbia County, GA is the father of our Joshua Stanford. Could he be Jonathan, Jr.? Surely there must be some land record out there that will at least give us the first name of our Jonathan’s wife while still living in Maryland. In addition to our Joshua, Jonathan Stanford, Sr. had as many as 10 children that have been identified by various Stanford researchers to include Jesse, Joshua, Stephen, Jonathan, Jr., Robert, Joseph, Elijah, Sarah “Sary,” Elender, Elizabeth, and Mary “Betty” Stanford. We are not sure how anybody came up with this list, and no sources were cited. We will not attempt to verify that information. What appears to be our Jonathan Stanford paid taxes in 1783 on several parcels of land in Somerset County to include a piece called “Stanford’s Finding” and 11 14 acres in the Wicomico District. This same 11 14 acres was gifted to Jonathan Stanford in 1772 by his father, Joseph Stanford, Jr. and this transaction will be discussed shortly. 11
