Bust of Thelma Heller 1964 ca. Plaster
Created as a gift for the people of Bay SL Louis, and presented to Mrs. Katherine Wilson, librarian, at a reception held at St Augfjstine Seminary in August 1964. The model for the bust was Thelma Heller (now Mrs. Thelma Landry), Wilson's daughter, a neighbor and personal friend of Barthe during the time he lived in lamaica.
Portrait of Portia La bat 1928
The late Portia Labat was the model for this portrait she had a special relationship with Barthe - she was the only one he allowed to call him 7immie," his childhood name. The many letters to her and her family following her death are testaments to the dose affection between the two.
La Mu la tress 1928 Bronze
Miss Inez Labat of Bay SL Louis sat as the model for this bust during a visit to Barthe in Chicago. The bronze piece was exhibited at the Chicago women's dub in 1930, and Barthe made a bronze copy for her.
The Comedian 1928 Plaster
This piece was modeled fiom a famous black comedian. It is one of Barthe's earlier works, and shown at his first major show for the Chicago Women's City dub, June 7-21, 1930. Damaged when it was knocked from the table upon which it was resting then pieced together, it has been in a private home in New Orleans for many years.
The Boxer 1942 Bronze
The Boxer is one of Barthe's most famous pieces, it was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1943. This sale, along with the sale of two others to the Whitney Museum, confirmed his reputation as a sculptor of national importance. This copy is one of four pieces owned by Mr. Louis Franklin, Barthe's stepbrother.
