October 1996 THE JIB SHEET PAGE 16 Editors Notes Over the past several months, we have compiled information from the Sea Coast Echo, the Hancock County Library, Charles A. Breath, Jr.’s scrapbook, Flo Scheib’s book, The History of the Southern Yacht Club, the Hancock County Historical Society and interviewed several individuals, and have enjoyed each and every minute. Before we began, John and I had a general idea about how, when and where the first Bay-Waveland Yacht Club came to be and when it was reorganized, but we didn’t know the minute details that we know now. Before marrying John Adams, I would spend every summer of my life in the Bay at my grandmothers home on the comer of North Beach and Leopold. If I would have thought then, that I would be living here and doing this Centennial Issue of the Jibsheet, I would have paid more attention to the “old” stories I used to hear from my Grandmothers and friends Grandparents about the Bay and the yacht club and would have begun this a long time ago. But, you never know! Two months ago, in the Jibsheet, we had asked that anyone with information, pictures or memorabilia, to please call us or drop info in our mailbox in the club’s office. John and I would first of all like to thank Ellen and Chuck Breath and Chuck Breath IV, for their vast library of pictures and for loaning us a scrapbook that was compiled by Rita L. Breath and filled with pictures and newspaper clippings from the early years of her son Charles A. “Junior ” Breath and her husband, Charles A. Breath, Sr. What a magnificent collection! Next I would like to thank Larry “Faw-Faw” Larroux whom I have known for many years. One of my favorite and most interesting conversations about the “old days” was with him. I only wish I would have brought my tape recorder with me. His memories are so vivid, that every detail comes to life. Thank you “Faw-Faw”. The recollections of C.C. McDonald, Carroll and Evie Gordon, Ellen and Chuck Breath, Walter and Malin Chamberlain, Iva Mae McDonald and my mom and dad, Virginia and John Worrel, helped us iron out some details on which we were quite hazy and confused. And of course, thanks to everyone who supplied us with pictures. On a more technical note, we can’t thank enough the efforts of Bishop Stieffel and Mike Chapoton for their expertise with scanning of pictures and business cards. The Sea Coast Echo played a large part of our research of historical data. Randy Ponder and Ellis Cuevas opened their doors to us and allowed us to” hog” the front counter looking through countless issues in search of interesting articles and pictures. The information that we compiled has been cross-referenced and we believe to be very accurate, however, if we left out any details, we do apologize. I would like to have put more recent information about our sailing accomplishments, but, we will save that for another issue. One day , as Judy Reeves was giving me a crash (refresher) course on a Scot in the middle of the Bay, with the sun gleaming on the water and the trees as deep green as they could be, she said, “How could anyone ask to be in a more beautiful place than here.” And isn’t that true. In all, we could not have done it without lots of help and we say, “Thank You,!” Happy Birthday, Bay-Waveland Yacht Club. “TOAST TO THE COAST" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11,1996 6:30pm-till 533 East Scenic Drive Pass Christian, Ms. S50.00 per person in advance Sheron Wilson, CTC Manager Bay St, Louis Agency Groups/Meetings' Depi.
