Peter and Tommy Heausler Win Sweet 16 National Championship
Tommy Heausler crewed for his son Peter as Peter skippered their Sweet 16 to victory at the 40th Annual National Championships at Lake Jacomo in Kansas City, MO, September 15 and 16, 2012. Peter scored finishes of 1,1,3,2,1 to best the Spinnaker division of the 15 boat fleet.
Winds were 8 to 10 knots and puffy and shifty, which is common for Midwest inland lakes. Peter and Tommy were literally in 15th place early in race 2 and 3, but used those puffs and shifts to their advantage to move up before the hour long races were concluded.
The Sweet 16’s were constructed in Kansas City in the 1970’s and a total of 700 were built. The boats are very durable and are like a smaller Flying Scot. As a result of their durability and a loyalty to the class in the Midwest, there are 40 year veterans racing against relative newcomers like 16 year old Peter Heausler.
