Appendix C SOURCES
Primary sources for the Civil War experiences of Marion Francis Baxter are the recollections he set down in the later years of his life. On four different occasions he either wrote himself or dictated these resumes. Particularly helpful was the version which included comments by his grandson John Roland Weston.
The letters of Col. Walter A. Rorer to his cousin, Susan, in Virginia revealed details about the operations of the 20th Mississippi (including Baxter?s Company E) not available elsewhere. Rorer was an officer in the regiment from its organization untilhis death at the battle of Franklin. His letters are contained ira the Wilcox papers at the Duke University Library. Permission to use them was kindly granted by the University.
Another collection which proved valuable was that of Lt. Charles Edwin Taylor. Included are his wartime letters and a small diary he kept while a prisoner at Camp Douglas, Chicago. Taylor served as 1st Sgt. of Company E, 20th Mississippi, and later was elected 2nd Lt. of the company. He died from the amputation of a leg following the battle of Franklin. His letters and diary are part of the collection in possession of G. Alister Henry of Montrose, Alabama. Mr. Henry is a descendant of the business partner of Taylor?s father.
