Boston’s Wayward Children
Peter C. Holloran’s book documenting social services for homeless children in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1830 until 1930 is now available.
Holloran not only covers Irish, Catholic, and Protestant efforts but also the Jewish, Black, and Italian child-saving societies and organizations.
Rarely seen photographs are reproduced throughout the book. Many of the photographs are of children but some show the buildings and persons in charge. One particularly appealing photo is on page 106 showing a scene on the lawn of St. Mary’s Infant Asylum in 1855. Over 20 toddlers and a caretaker are enjoying an obviously sunny day.
A flyer from the early days of the New England Home For Little Wanderers is shown on page 126 opposite the text reading, “Orphan trains were dispatched throughout the 1870s to Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.”
