THE SUN-HERALD Monday, November 12, 1990 Volunteers are needed to save our children * Child abuse is a serious and growing national problem. More than two million suspected cases of abuse and neglect are reported each year. Several thousand children die annually as a result of abuse and neglect. Hundreds of thousands of cases are unreported. Citizens can help prevent child abuse by knowing the warning signs and how to report a suspected case of abuse or neglect. In 1979, the National Foundation of the Exchange Clubs adopted the prevention of child abuse as a national project. Since then more than 61 centers have opened in 26 states and one in Ptierto Rico. Through the efforts of this foundation, over 6,000 children have been helped. In operation since 1988, the South Mississippi Exchange Club Family Child Center provides child abuse prevention services to I Hancock, Harrison, Stone and . J Jackson county residents. § The Center uses professionally trained and supervised volunteer parent aides to work with families where abuse has occurred, as well as families considered “at risk.” Volunteers visit the families at home to demonstrate proper parenting skills, suggest appropriate discipline techniques and alternate coping methods. Another service which'we have begun coordinating and offering jointly with the Victim-Witness Program of the District Attorney’s office recently is the Child Victim/ Witness Preparation Group. This approach helps prepare children , for the courtroom experience i through education and support. > Interested people are needed I to help with all of the programs we j sponsor. Our next volunteer training session will be held Nov. 14 at The Family Child Center. Interested persons should call the Center a| 868-8686. BRIDGET LOGAN Family Child Center Guljport
