A Bibliography of Theses and Dissertations Relating to Mississippi, 1955
Compiled by James H. McLendon
T\VO YEARS AGO THE JOURNAL INAUGURATED THE policy of publishing an annual compilation of theses and dissertations relating to Mississippi that had been submitted for advanced degrees during the preceding year. The inventory was designed to call attention to this valuable and often hard-to-locate type of material and to perform a special service for persons interested in Mississippi history. The favorable reception of the two previous editions has prompted the assembling of a check list for 1955. This year an additional effort has been made to secure reports on theses and dissertations in progress but not yet accepted for degree requirements. This feature was suggested as a collateral function that could provide an important clearinghouse service.
The bibliography is designed to list particularly those products of research that relate to the history of the state. The list was gathered by a questionnaire which requested author’s name, thesis title, whether Mississippi was dealt with in the entire work or only in part of it, the period treated (if not indicated by the title), approximate or exact number of pages, degree involved, and (if already conferred) the date of the degree. Explanatory remarks were also solicited. The questionnaire was mailed to 105 institutions of higher learning located throughout the United States, including all those likely to have pertinent theses and others likely to have staff members or advanced students working on
