The photography was taken by Allyson Keller with help from her friend Dotty Overal. The historical and architectual basis for the brochure is on file in the rectory of Our Lady of the Gulf and contains a colorful descrpition of the allegorical and theological symbols that space prohibits in this brochure.
This brochure is offered by Allyson L. Keller, owner of Jolly Rogers Printing for love of her church and its parishoners. Addition assistance for this brochure was given by Jane and Kevin Fountain, owners of Peter's Weiners in gratitude for the birth of their daughter, Ella Victoria Fountain, whom they plan to Christen at Our Lady of the Gulf this summer of 1989.
In the winter of 1984, Allyson Keller came in through the side doors and sat down for the first time in Our Lady of the Gulf; she had recently remembered that Immanuel Kant said, "When man has exhausted Science and Exploration, he then turns to God." Raised as a intellectual empiricist, and though exposed to the Catholic faith during her years at Loyola University, she had never considered it a recourse to the world weariness she felt. Committing herself to give it six months and try this "God thing", she began attending services. On her third Sunday, Allyson heard the choir sing "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You", recognizing Beethoven, the next Sunday she was in the choir where she met the exquisite catholic faith in the form of faithful parishoners. The want to share .the gifts of Our Lady of the Gulf has been the genesis of this brochure.
Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church is cared for by committed parishoners, a dedicated altar society and others. Feel free to ask our "walking historians" Alberta Beyer or Florence Mauffray question as they go about the caring for our beloved church. Our Lady of the Gulf welcomes you and hopes you will stop in to visit and pray.
The Shrine of Our Lady of the Woods
was erected in 1847 by Fr. Stanislaus Buteux. A statue was brought from France a few months after its erection and several years later, a gentleman in serious difficulties, prayed to Our Lady of the Woods for aid, and promised to erect a suitable shrine in her honor should her grace be obtained. True to his word, the gentleman fulfilled his promise and the present shrine was built. The original statue has stood all these years, and more than once in the hurricanes it was thought to have been lost, only to turn up under the leafy debris. Hurled around by hurricanes, standing the test of time, this plaster of paris statue has had no other protection than the tiny dome of the shrine overhead.
The shrine of Our Lady of the Woods is located to the rear of the Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis and may be found by exiting the east side of the church and following the tree lined path to the end of the property.
