The Troubadours are an integrated company. Casting requirements for the five musicals include black, white, Native American, and Asian actors. These professionals, performing together nightly and working together in the youth programs will present highly visible, positive examples of communication and cooperation to the general public and especially to youth.
Colleges and universities will be invited to place senior and graduate interns with PaddleWheel Productions and Theatre Plus for one or two semesters. Such a placement will offer a unique experience to students: the opportunity not only to work in the performance, technical, and management areas in a for-profit professional repertory theatre, but also to work with children and teens and in the management area of a nonprofit theatre. The organization has members qualified academically to teach and supervise interns.
SECTION D.
FOOD SERVICE AND OTHER BUSINESS ACTIVITIES
Because having a theatre/food combination ticket has proved to be a successful marketing tool, PaddleWheel Productions has created several options for such service. The enclosed multi-purpose porch (see Section E) will be used prior to productions for a “Picnic On The Porch.” Food for this activity will be catered. Although no contract has been signed, the front runner is Heavenly Ham in Ocean Springs, which has good food, good service, and good prices. A picnic box (choice of sandwich, a side such as cole slaw or potato salad, and a cookie) would sell for $6.50. Pre-packaged soup and other salads would also be available ($2.25 to $4.50). ' Because the porch will seat only 200, arrangements are being made with several area restaurants to create a “theatre special” which would be a part of a theatre/dinner combination ticket. PaddleWheel Productions does the advertising, sells the ticket, and notifies the restaurant as to the number of patrons to expect on a particular date. PaddleWTieel Productions collects a set percentage on the price of the meal and pays the restaurant weekly for the remainder.
One corner of the porch will be an “Ice Cream Corner” with a variety of pre-packaged ice cream products. These will range in price from fifty cents to $2.00 per item. The northwest corner of the lobby will house ‘The Bar” with one end devoted to tea, coffee, juice, and soft drinks and the other to wine and mixed drinks. All containers will be either paper or plastic. The tea, etc., will sell for $1.00 (refills free), wine and mixed drinks range from $2.50 to $4.50.
The north wall of the lobby and space immediately in front of it will house the gift shop. Every item sold in the gift shop will advertise the theatre and its location. There will be items as simple as magnets and cups for under three dollars to T-shirts, jackets, and cast albums (cassette’s and CD’s) for $15 to $25.
SECTION E THE BUILDING
The theatre is being designed from a sketch provided by PaddleWheel Productions’ directors to be professionally functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. The front of the building has a covered entrance to make loading and unloading easy. The lobby houses the box office, the gift shop, the bar, restrooms, and the elevator to the balcony. The 120 foot porch on the south side houses the catering area and the dining area, which will be converted to teaching and performing areas for children and youth. The porch overlooks a wooded space which provides picnic tables and some parking.
