Berthelot, Mrs. Hattie Avery Berthelot, who has been here on a visit to her mother, left on Monday for her home in Ascension parish, La. Mrs. Berthelot was accompanied by her lovely sister, Miss Blanche Avery. (SCE 11/19/1892) Avery, Miss B. - Columbus Day. Wednesday, October 12th, 1892 was the fourth centennial anniversary of the discovery of America, and while this event is being celebrated throughout the nation in elegance and grandeur, Bay St. Louis was not in patriotism to observe the day.
The great Columbus was, in religion, a devout Catholic, and it was just and appropriate that the Catholics recognize the birth day of the discovery of a new world by one of its true followers. At 8 o'clock, Wednesday, a High Mass was held at the church of Our Lady of the Gulf, Very Rev. Father H. Leduc, officiating, Rev. Father Alphonse spoke briefly upon the occasion in beautiful and appropriate terms.
In the evening, at 7 o'clock the pupils of St. Joseph.s Academy entertained a large number of Ladies and gentlemen by the execution of the following programme which we well received and loudly applauded:
