ELIHU CARVER
Look into any telephone book and the name of Carver will have
plenty of listings. It is among ta he top names of England.1
The first Carver to arrive in the "new world" wasi Deacon John
Carver, who on August 21, 1620 sailed on the Mayflower. Even before
sailing, he was made Governor of the group and he was the first to sign

the	Mayflower Compact.	He came to America	for religious	freedom.
Since John Carver had no heirs, the name "Father of	the Carvers
in America" fell to Robert Carver from Yorkshire, England. Some say

he was a brother; others	say nephew to John	Carver - take	your pick.
Elihu Carver, Sr.,	who is buried here	is about the	6th generation

from Robert Carver. He was born in Canterbury, Conn, Jan 5? 1777 ?
He came South, fought	in the	War of	1812. On July	1813	he
married Justine Nicaise	of Bay St.	Louis.	And	in 1814	the	first	son,

Elihu "Leo" Carver, Jr.	was	born.
Dec 8, 1816 Elihu	was	appointed Assessor	and Tax	Collector	for
Hancock County.^	As the official	surveyor for this	county, he surveyed
and platted a good portion of the	county during his	life time. In	1819
he made the first plat for Pearlington for the Pearlington Company.^
In 1825 he	bought 490 acres	- practically all	of Cedar Point	-
for $367.50 from	John Hopkins and	John Miller of Jefferson County,	Ms.
He homesteaded on what is now called "Carver's Camp" on what is now

named Joe?s Bayou and lived there until his death in 1855* Some of
his relatives still live there.10
