New Hanover County, North Carolina David Lee 1690/95-1743
Subsequent to printing the first edition of my book, further evidence came into my hands on the ancestry of Peyton Lee. 1 now have satisfactory evidence that his great grandfather was David Lee who is mentioned on page H in the closing paragraph of Bryant Lee.
Genealogist E. R. Williams, Jr. and some other reseachers have suggested that James Lee was a son of Bryan Lee who was the son of Solomon Lee who made his will in Edgecombe County in 1762. Solomon Lee's father wa? Richard Lee. The similarities of names and dates are attractive but further research has revealed that this conclusion is in error.	Bryan Lee	of
Edgecombe County was a minor at the	time of his father's	death, as	a guar-
dian was appointed. He was still in Edgecombe County on Feb. 28, 1780 (after the 1768 death of Bryant Lee	of New Hanover County) when he	sold	to
Richard Horn of Johnston County 150	acres on town Creek,	which had	been
granted to Richard Lee, bequeathed to his son, Solomon, and in turn bequeathed to his son Bryan Lee. These Lees might have been related to the New Hanover Lees but they were not their immediate ancestors.
The following is the history that I have on David Lee;. Also additional evidence is presented concerning possible brothers of Bryant Lee and James Lee.
An important legal factor is involved in determining the relationship of David Lee to Bryant Lee and Bryant's son, James Lee. Until 1784, the law of primogeniture was in effect in North Carolina under which the eldest son of an intestate father usually inherited all the father's land. I will present land records that show that James Lee sold land originally purchased by David Lee and apparently passed on to his eldest son Bryant Lee who in
turn passed it on to his eldest son James Lee.
