JOHN SIDNEY OTIS Mildred Otis Fountain John Sidney Otis was born December 25, 1 858, in Handsboro, Mississippi, the only child of Sidney Otis of Jefferson County, New York and Margaret Vermelle Baxter, a native of Sumpter County, South Carolina. Early in life he began working around the sawmill; one of his first tasks was to move sawdust away from the mill in a wheelbarrow. He attended private schools, public school in Logtown, and took a business course in a college in Jackson. Mr. Otis married Viola Amelia Carre' on December 15, 1884, in Logtown. She was the daughter of Henry Carre', partner in the lumber business with Henry Weston. Mr. and Mrs. Otis had six children; Henry, Clara, Sidney, Lamar, Waldo and Ethel. J. Sidney Otis was Secretary-Treasurer and a stockholder in the H. Weston Lumber Company at the time it was organized. He was in charge of financing sales, solving company administrative problems, and developing sales and manufacturing policies. Mr. Otis was invaluable to the success of the lumber company. He was an excellent judge of the quality and value of lumber, and an extremely keen trader, using honorable strategies to secure the best possible prices. He was well known in the lumber business in
